The debt will not be erased unless you contact them and ask for it to be erased. The 6 year time limit only applies if you still live at the same address as when you took out the debt, or have advised them of any change of address. If you have moved or changed your name then they may have been trying to contact you, in which case the 6 year rule is not applicable.

It seems that trying to "not respond" your way out of your debt is a bit unethical. On the other hand, if a business is not smart enough to keep record of its debtors, then I suppose they can't complain. This is almost a comical idea to me.
